And so it was that just a little over 200 years ago a nation was created; a nation that would be "of the people, by the people and for the people". And for a little while it worked. Countries much older than us crumbled under the weight of their own oppression. But we were different, we were the "progressives";we knew better, we invented a democracy. Looking back I'm almost giddy at the thought of it. A nation where people are free of religious persecution, a nation where all people are free to pursue their happiness and success. At least I am old enough to remember that this is how it truly was, I lived it, I saw it first hand. Too bad it didn't last. For decades the tide has been turning; I've been watching, have you? Little by little the freedoms have been chipped away, little by little the weight of government has become heavier. Of the people, by the people and for the people has been replaced...now it's big business and big government that run the show. Neither party gives a damn about "the people", they only give a damn about themselves. We've only ourselves to blame, we allowed it, we gave "them" the power and now we are led like cattle to the slaughter, as each day the hard working, tax paying, flag flying citizens of this country take it on the chin.
What is it going to take before more than a handful of us see the scams being perpetrated upon us each and every day? Our borders are a sieve, leaving us vulnerable to terrorism, disease, drugs and violence. Our politicans care more for votes than for the safety of the citizens they swore to protect. The "CAFTA" agreement has made its way through the congress which means more American businesses and jobs will leave our shores for greener pastures in some third world country. When the rest of us are left to say "Welcome to Walmart", how will their inflated taxes be paid? Each and every day we are sold out by a government that is an aberration of the government of our founders. How they must be spinning!
Don 't think for one minute that I am against my country. It is the evil that governs it that I am against. I'm a true patriot, I love this country and I love the tenets and values it was founded upon. That is why I'm hurt to the core at what it has become. Perhaps I won't see its complete demise in my own lifetime, but what of the generation after me? What is in store for them? I shudder to think of it.
